The mechanism, briefly
Glutathione is a tripeptide antioxidant made in every cell. Two things make it relevant to skin: it neutralises reactive oxygen species generated by UV and pollution, and it interacts with the tyrosinase pathway that governs melanin production, nudging pigment synthesis toward lighter eumelanin fractions.
That second mechanism is why glutathione is associated with 'brightening'. The accurate description is a more even, less oxidatively stressed complexion — not a change in your natural skin colour.
Safety and honest limits
Glutathione has a good tolerability record when pharmacy-sourced and administered by a professional at appropriate doses. Reported reactions are uncommon and usually mild. Risk rises sharply with unregulated products, unverified sourcing and administration outside a clinical protocol — that is the real hazard in this category, not the molecule.
It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and anyone with asthma should raise it during screening.
What a realistic result looks like
Most people notice clarity and evenness before they notice anything they would call lightening: less dullness, calmer post-inflammatory marks, skin that photographs better. Changes build over a course and fade if sun exposure, sleep and topical care are neglected.
Sessions maintain a result; they do not lock one in. Anyone promising permanence is selling something.
